What the numbers mean for a remodeling firm

Half of all kitchen remodelers on Google have 9 reviews or fewer. For a trade where the average sale is tens of thousands of dollars and the homeowner reads every review before booking a consultation, that is a low bar, and it means most of your competitors have not cleared it. 15.2% have no reviews at all. 71.7% have fewer than 25.

The mean of 24.4 is pulled up by a small group of large design-build firms and cabinet showrooms with multiple locations. Ignore it. The percentiles are the useful lines. The 75th percentile is 28 reviews. The 90th is 59. Only 4.5% of kitchen remodelers have passed 100 and 0.1% have passed 500.

Here is why that matters more for you than for a plumber. A plumber gets 300 jobs a year and can ask every one. A kitchen remodeler completes 25 to 80 projects a year. Your review count will never reach a plumber's, and it does not need to. It needs to beat the two other firms the homeowner is comparing you against. In most metros the firm that wins the design consultation has 40 to 90 reviews with photos in them. That is the 75th to 90th percentile here, and it is reachable at one review per project.

Ratings do not separate anyone

The average rating across rated listings is 4.7. 84% of kitchen remodelers sit at 4.5 stars or above and 53.1% hold a perfect 5.0, usually because they have a handful of reviews. Only 6.8% are under 4.0. A homeowner looking at three firms rated 4.8, 4.9 and 5.0 does not choose on stars. They choose on the number of reviews, how recent they are, and whether the reviews describe a project like theirs.

12.1% of listings have no rating because they have no reviews. If that is you, the first ten reviews are the highest-return marketing you will do this year.

The website gap is not about websites

81.7% of kitchen remodelers list a website and 18.3% do not. That is one of the highest website rates of any home-service trade, which makes sense: nobody sells a $60,000 project from a Facebook page. So the site itself is table stakes.

The interesting number is what sits next to it. Remodelers with a website have a median of 13 reviews. Remodelers without one have a median of 1. The website does not produce the reviews. Both come from the same habit: an owner who treats the firm's public presence as part of the product. If your site is good and your review count is near the median, you are halfway there and the other half is cheaper.

Hours and contact details

29.5% of kitchen remodelers list no hours at all. For a showroom business, that is a missed consultation. A homeowner on a Saturday morning wants to know if they can walk in. 34.3% show Saturday hours and 9.8% show Sunday. A firm that lists Saturday 10 to 2 by appointment stands out in a category where most listings are silent.

96% of listings have at least one photo, so a photo is not a differentiator. Forty project photos with captions are. 23.2% show a public email, which matters more in this trade than in emergency trades because homeowners early in a remodel prefer to write rather than call.

What to do with this

  1. Count your reviews and find your percentile. Below 9 means the first job is reviews, before any ad spend. Above 28 means you can start on ads and AI search with a foundation that converts.
  2. Set a review pace of one per completed project, asked at the final walkthrough with the designer present. The reviews guide has the script and timing.
  3. List your hours, including Saturday by-appointment hours if you take them. It takes four minutes and most of your category has not done it.
  4. Add 40 project photos to your profile with the neighborhood and the scope in each caption. The profile guide explains which photos get clicks.
  5. Put a price range on your website and on your profile's services list. It reduces unqualified consultations and gives AI assistants something to quote.
  6. Pick one lead source to fix this quarter and measure it to the signed contract. Use the calculator to see what slow follow-up on that source is already costing.

Method

This report aggregates 9,352 public Google Business Profile listings collected from Google Maps searches for kitchen remodeling companies across every US state, deduplicated by place. Review counts and ratings are as displayed on the listing at collection time. "Website listed" means the profile links to any URL; we classify the URL as an owned domain, a social profile, or a free site builder by hostname. Figures are refreshed monthly.
